General care of jewelry

Before we dive into the specific care tips for real silver jewelry, there are some general rules you should follow to extend the life of your jewelry.
These guidelines apply to almost every piece of jewelry, regardless of the material it is made of.

Why should you take off jewelry when showering?

• You should take off your jewelry when bathing, showering and swimming. You've probably heard this before - but why is it so important to take off your jewelry before showering?
Water and chemicals (soap, bath additives, chlorine, etc.) can damage real silver and cause discoloration.

If your piece of jewelry contains stones, this is especially important, as some gemstones are sensitive to water. But don't worry, they can easily withstand a rain shower ;)
If your piece of jewellery has gotten really wet, try to dry it thoroughly as quickly as possible.

Can I wear jewelry while applying cream?

• Avoid direct contact with perfumes, soaps, oils or other cosmetic products and household chemicals. These substances can attack the silver and damage its surface. Always remove your jewelry before applying products or doing housework. This is also very important if your jewelry contains gemstones.

Can jewelry scratch?

• Sharp objects can scratch your jewelry. So whenever you are not wearing your jewelry, keep it in the box provided to keep it safe and protected from scratches.

How can I clean jewelry properly?

• For regular cleaning, you can usually simply wipe your jewelry with a soft cotton cloth and a mild, fragrance-free soap when needed. Be sure to skip stones and rinse the jewelry thoroughly and dry it carefully to avoid water spots.

Care of jewelry - real silver, brass, bronze, copper and gold

Now we come to the specific care tips for real silver and other metals such as brass, bronze, copper and gold:

Help, my silver has tarnished!

• It is completely normal and not a quality defect that real silver and other metals can tarnish at different rates from person to person due to oxidation. If your jewelry tarnishes and you don't like the antique look, you can easily restore it to its former shine with a special jewelry polishing cloth. Make sure to only polish the metal and avoid stones or pearls, as polishing could dull them.

If you order a piece of jewelry made of real silver, brass, bronze, copper or gold (filled) from my shop, I will always include a small jewelry polishing cloth.

polishing gold and silver plating

• Use jewelry polishing cloths sparingly on plated jewelry, as they can wear away the plating over time. It is advisable to wipe the jewelry gently and not polish it too vigorously in order to preserve the plating for as long as possible.

How good are silver baths?

• Silver baths are great for jewelry that is made entirely of metal and does not contain pearls, gemstones or other design elements.

There is a simple recipe for cleaning your real silver jewelry to remove stubborn discoloration.
Again, this method is suitable for real silver jewelry without delicate gemstones or pearls. Do not use it on jewelry with delicate surfaces or coatings, as this can cause damage!

A proven home remedy is the following:

1. Place a bowl or container made of glass, stainless steel or plastic on the table. Fill it with warm, almost hot water.

2. Add one tablespoon of salt and one tablespoon of baking soda to the water. Stir to make sure the salt and baking soda dissolve well.

3. Place a piece of aluminum foil in the bowl so that it covers the bottom and sides. Make sure the shiny side of the aluminum foil is facing up.

4. Carefully place your sterling silver jewelry pieces on the aluminum foil in the water. Make sure they are completely submerged in the solution.

5. Leave the jewelry in the solution for about 5-10 minutes. During this time, a chemical process called ion exchange will take place, which will help remove the dirt and oxidation from the surface of the silver.

6. After the soaking time has elapsed, carefully remove the jewelry from the solution. Rinse thoroughly under warm water to remove any residue.

7. Dry the jewelry thoroughly with a soft cloth to avoid water spots. Then polish it with a jewelry polishing cloth to restore its shine.

Can heat damage jewelry?

• Avoid long periods of direct sunlight when wearing resin jewelry and take your jewelry off when using a solarium. You should also keep resin jewelry away from strong heat (e.g. from a grill or campfire) as it can become deformed or even melt if exposed to too much heat.

And now it’s time to take care of your jewelry!
Good luck, I hope I was able to help you a little. If you are looking for other pieces of jewelry to care for, take a look in the shop ! ;)
